This year I made my first U16 Australian Canoe Team just after turning 15yrs old. We completed at the Asia Pacific Championships in South Australia and I came home with a silver and two bronze medals. Even before competing at the championships I was looking forward to making my next Australian team. I loved every minute of being on the team - I loved that it showed my hard work during the year had paid off, the team atmoshere, the pride that it gave me wearing my uniform and standing on the podium for Australia and becoming better friends with my teammates and international competitors.
Next year my aim is to make the Australian U16 Asia Pacific team again, this time heading to New Zealand and to make the U16 Olympic Hopes team heading to Europe. To make the teams next year I have added two gym sessions and two run sessions per week to my program which already consists of 6 kayaking sessions on the water per week. I have also discussed my goals with my coach, Peter Winton, and we are working together with my parents to help me reach them.
I live on the Gold Coast in QLD and our selection races this season are being held in SA (Dec 18), NSW (Jan and Feb 19) and WA (Mar 19) and International Championships are in NZ (May 19) and Europe (Jul 19). Funding for me will account for my travel, accommodation, boat transport and event entry fees and costs. I have also had another growth spurt and would be better suited to a larger boat.
Our biggest regatta for the season and most heavily weighted for selection is the National Championships. This year they are being held in WA. As a 13/14yr old at the nationals I won all my individual events (K1 200, K1 500, K1 1000, K1 2500) and all of my doubles events (K2 200, K2 500,K2 1000, K2 2500) and last year in the 15/16yr age group I placed 1st (K2 2500) and 3rd (K2 1000, K2 500, K2 200).
I am currently in year 10 at Palm Beach Currumbin State School and a member of the Sports Excellence Program. Last year I won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year and the Reds Member of the Year. Reds is the name given to all of our sporting teams at shool and I am very proud to be a PBC Red!
