Chilli began biathlon in 2019 as a way to summer train for XC skiing, and loved the challenge of target shooting and skiing. She won the NSW Junior Biathlon (laser) and the NSW interschools XC skiing (Div 4). She went on to win a gold medal at the Australian Interschools XC (Div 4). She also competed for experience in the Australian Junior Championship Under 15 XC races in Falls Creek and placed 4th in the sprint and 5th in the distance races.
Unfortunately Covid-19 meant no biathlon or XC ski competitions in 2020 and 2021, however Chilli kept fitness up in hockey, rep hockey, mountainbiking, water polo, rep waterpolo, cricket, touch football, rugby 7s training trampolining, horseriding and work on the family farm.
Early 2021 also brought devastating news as Chilli learnt of a very large cyst inside her spinal chord, and underwent lifesaving brain surgery in March. She has recovered spectacularly, slowed down slightly by a broken ankle slipping on the snowy rugby field whilst biathlon training in Mt Hotham in July. Her fierce determination and drive to succeed has aided her recovery.
Chilli is strong, her reflexes are sharp, her fitness is good and she is ready to take her training to the next level.
Biathlon East Australia has offered Chilli the opportunity to train and race in Europe in January as part of the State Development team, with top level Olympic coaches at the world class Biathlon arena in Obertilliach, Austria.
This will be an important step in her goal to gain selection to represent Australia in the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Biathlon. She is ready to come back strongly after a challenging year!
