About the project

My name is Harry Armstrong - I am 18 years old and compete in Sprint Kayaking and Surf Ski sports. I have been selected in the U18 team to represent Australia at the 2018 ICF Canoe Sprint Junior World Championships to be held in July in Bulgaria. This is my second time representing Australia in Sprint Kayaking. I have previously travelled to Hungary in the Olympic Hopes team. Sprint Kayak (otherwise known as Canoe) is a big sport in Europe and for me to have the experience of racing against the best in the world is an incredible experience and is an important stepping stone to future pathways in the sport - which can ultimately lead to Olympics!

I am a member of Avoca Kayak Club and also a member of NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS). Having access to the quality coaching from NSWIS and Australian Canoeing (soon to be Paddle Australia) has been invaluable to my development and improvement as a paddle athlete. In order for me to continue accessing this coaching, I need to continue to attend interstate training camps and achieving team selection, such as the Junior Worlds.

I am seeking support from the community to help me be part of this U18's Junior Worlds team. In four weeks, my family has to fund a three-week trip that includes two weeks in Hungary (a training camp prior to the world championships) and a week of competition in Plovdiv, Bularia. We leave on 10 July 2018. There is no state or national sports funding for junior athletes who get the chance to represent Australia unless you make Open Teams or the Olympics.

This is a big ask at short notice and I’m hoping that through some local fundraising, my participation can be a reality. As it stands today, the costs for me to travel to Europe, accommodation, food, equipment and travel expenses are estimated to be approximately $6,000.00.

My parents have, through the Australian Sports Foundation, created a sports based ‘go fund me’ page (but it’s not using Go Fund Me!!). The bonus of using the Australian Sports Foundation is that all donations are tax deductible so you can recoup some of your donation at tax time!

All donations, no matter how small, will help me represent Australia in my chosen sport!

With your permission, I would love to post thankyou messages on my Instagram page to those who support me in my fundraising effort, so you can expect a post from me recognising your contribution ! (unless you tell me otherwise).

Stay up to date with everything happening at the sports foundation
