Katelyn Rika

This fundraising program will enable me to have access to more opportunities to participate in National Ranking events, which will improve my amateur ranking as a junior/female golfer; to one day represent my country in golf at the national and international level. My greatest challenge is that I live remotely in Nhulunbuy, a coastal town located in NE Arnhem Land, NT. For example, the nearest golf course is over 1000km, that can only be done by 4-wheel drive; or is an expensive airfare to a either Darwin or Cairns, plus a connecting flight that will get me to where the tournaments are being held. There are approximately 20 ranking events on the national calendar and I can only attend about 5 each year. Improving my national ranking is important to achieving my goals. http://www.golf.org.au/girls_rankings

This fundraising program will alleviate the costs of travel (airfares, accommodation), competition fees, State/NT Levy fees, equipment, coaching and physiotherapy costs involved with being a Golf NT High Performance Athlete.

Currently, I need to upgrade my equipment (golf clubs) and your support would be greatly appreciated.

As a junior golfer, I'm currently ranked the number 1 NT junior and number 1 NT female with a handicap of +1. I’ve completed the Golf Australia Community Golf Instructor Accreditation for MYGOLF. http://www.golf.org.au/newsdisplay/rika-reaps-rewards-from-mygolf/99289

In 2018, our club piloted the Girls'-only MYGOLF Program and we have had more than 50% girls participating in junior golf. http://www.mygolf.org.au/news-display/gove-girls-buck-the-trend/99861 I love being involved with my local club as a role model for young golfers helping out with running the girls golf, holiday clinics and Indigenous golf clinics. The girls' golf is very exciting and is my way of giving back to the community. I started my journey with MYGOLF at 8 years old and I see myself completing this journey as a Professional Golfer. My involvement in promoting girls golf has been featured in Case Study where the Gove Country Golf Club was a finalist in the "Play by The Rules Ward", which recognises outstanding initiatives that contribute to safe, fare and more inclusive sport: https://www.playbytherules.net.au/resources/case-studies/gove-country-golf-club-girls-golf-initiative

Some of my titles include:

2011 - Gove Open Amateur Champion

Fundraising support over the next two years (2018, 2019) will focus on targets of being able to more than 10 ranking events, which will increase my skills in golf and improve my national ranking. I believe that, "No matter where you live, dreams can be achieved with the right support. I hope my story and success will inspire more young people, especially young women, to keep working hard to achieve their dreams. I'm looking for sponsors to help me achieve my dream. Here is a YouTube clip that tells my story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nuEmWRe9xk

In April, 2018 I had the honour of being interviewed on the "Inside the Ropes" Radio Show. The news story and interview can be accessed here: http://www.golf.org.au/newsdisplay/katelyn-helps-put-gove-on-golf-map/100425
