My name is Michael Hosking and I am one of Australia's best Race Walkers. I recently competed at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where I finished 10th in the 20km Race Walk. I achieved selection for the games and this result working full time as a teacher at the Wodonga Middle Years Secondary College as well juggling family life with my wife Dee and our two boys Blair and Lewis.
Up until now it has been possible to be an amateur athlete and still qualify for major international teams without having any outside support. However the IAAF have changed the selection criteria for major international competitions and I am now required to compete internationally if I hope to achieve qualification for the upcoming Doha World Championships in 2019 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At the age of 32 Athletics Australia are unwilling to assist me in my pursuit of an Olympic berth as they think I have little room for improvement. Being the main income earner it is difficult to take time off work and be able to afford the cost of competing at these events. This is why I am now asking for your support to allow me to continue to chase my dreams.
I am always willing to give back to the local Albury Wodonga community and some of the events I have attended as a guest speaker this year have included: The Norske Skog Young Achiever Awards, The Wodonga Little Athletics Awards Night and The Chiltern Girl Guides Commonwealth Games Badge Ceremony. At these events, I have done my best in inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams.
I would greatly appreciate any support in helping me achieve my Olympic dream. In doing so you are supporting a hardworking, honest, country boy who always gives his very best when representing his country.
Thank you for taking the time to read through my story.
