About the project

After winning the 2018 Australian youth nationals in the laser radial class, I made the move to the olympic 49er class. 6 months in, I teamed up with Joel Turner from the Gold Coast with the combined mission to compete and win gold at the tokyo 2020 olympics.

I began sailing at the end of 2014 when I was 14 at school before purchasing a laser early in 2015. My passion for sailing grew and grew as I competed in the laser 4.7. I was fortunate enough to take 1st place at sailing world cup Melbourne 2015 before a 4th place at the nationals. With my drive to compete and succeed constantly increasing, I took on the laser 4.7 worlds in Kiel, Germany, during 2016 where I learnt a lot about foreign sailing, cultures, and how to race in a big fleet of 400 boats! Moving then to the radial, I continued to train relentlessly at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly, QLD with a short lead into the nationals in Adelaide. I managed to place 9th youth in one of my first radial competitions. 2017 was a year of improvement, hours spent grinding up moreton bay as apart of an awesome training group with some exceptional coaching support. The 2018 nationals were held at home at RQYS and I was stoked to come away with the youth victory on home waters with my friends and family there to support.

I then took the big step to move to skiffs and the olympic 49er class. A huge difference in speed and thrills, the 49er also brought some spills. After 4 months at home training, I teamed up with Joel Turner and we are now pushing towards selection for the Tokyo 2020 olympic games. We have already competed across Australia and been training at home and at camps in Sydney however, the next step is international competition. America, Spain, Italy, Japan, England and New Zealand are all on the cards for events in 2019.

I greatly appreciate any support no matter how big or small and welcome you to join me on my journey to Tokyo 2020.

Thanks,

Tom
