This October I will be competing in my first Marathon in Melbourne. As part of my training efforts I have decided to raise funds for the “defibs 4 parkrun campaign”, with the goal of ensuring that all parkruns throughout Australia have access to a defibrillator. With currently 278 parkruns throughout Australia and at a cost of $2000 per unit, the cost of providing these life-saving devices is a costly one, but one that can be easily met through your donations.
As of the beginning of February, there was more than 400,000 Australian parkrunners registered and with $200,000 already raised throughout the campaign, there remains an additional $400,00 required. Whilst this may seem significant at first, this works out to $1 per registered parkrunner in Australia and even less if every Australian donated.
Parkrun provides the fantastic opportunity for everyone participate in a free, 5KM timed run every Saturday all across Australia. This event has helped thousands improve their fitness, their mental health and their quality of life. As someone who has benefitted from regular Parkrunning, I feel that it is my obligation to give back to an organisation that has improved my lifestyle.
Regardless of whether you are a parkrunner or not, we can all agree that defibrillators can make the difference between life and death. It would be terrible to tragic death of an individual on a parkrun course, knowing that this could have been avoided with one simple defibrillator.
Many Thanks for your support,
