This inspirational sports fundraising story began with Glen Iris campaigning to fundraise for their junior teams to have the opportunity to play teams from the remote Papunya Aboriginal Community. In the past, fundraising assistance came in the form of sending Glen Iris players to the Northern Territory to experience playing barefoot on red earth, hunting witchetty grubs, sleeping rough and learning about the culture of this unique community.

This year, the club wanted to give back to the Papunya community and bring the players to Melbourne so that they could experience football in Victoria.

Nine children and four adults visited Melbourne, and for many, this was their first time away from home. Over six days, the Papunya team itinerary included playing several games against the Glen Iris Junior Football Club, visiting Richmond Football Club and participating in the ‘Long Walk’ before attending the AFL Dreamtime game.

The Australian Sports Foundation is thrilled to have had the privilege of working with the Glen Iris Junior Football Club on this project, as it highlights the positive impact and significance of sport in communities throughout the country.

Fundraising target: $50,000
