Step 5 – Kick to win the game! How to make a successful ask

25 May 2017

When trying to decide how to ask for a donation, it’s always a good idea to put yourself in the mind of a donor. People don’t like to feel as though they’re being “sold” something, however, they do like to “give” because it makes them feel good and that they’re making a difference.

Most importantly, people don’t give unless they are asked. No fundraising appeal has ever been successful without asking for support, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Your request will be most effective if it’s specific and lines up with the emotion of your fundraising story. A few examples are:

  • “A donation of $20 provides a basketball to a child who has never owned one before. Can you help?”
  • “$50 will pay for a playing uniform for one of our less fortunate players. Will you help?”
  • “If every club member makes a donation of $25 before the end of the season, we’ll have our much-needed oval lights before next season. Will you help?”

Make sure, through your story, it’s obvious why your supporters should care. Also, remember to let donors know how they can make their donation e.g. online, donate at an event, add a donation to the registration fee.

Finally, have a sense of urgency when asking. You want your supporters to know that you need them to donate now.
