My name is Adam Maccan and I am currently a first year U/23 road and ITT (Individual Time Trial) cyclist based out of Perth, Western Australia. I grew up and started cycling with the Esperance Cycle Club and I am proud of my country background and the small remote club that taught me how to ride and nurtured my love for the sport.

I am currently studying Business part-time at Murdoch University, while also working casual hours at Pedalare, which is a cycling apparel company based in Perth. My studies are online to allow me maximum flexibility around training, work and travel. My part time work is my only income source, so I try to make myself available as much as possible, but I generally average around twenty hours per week while in Perth.

I have previously won two state ITT gold medals, and several other medals in U/19 road and criterium races. I finished 28th in the National U/23 Road Race as an 18-year-old in 2023 and achieved 5th place in the General Classification in the Tour of Siak in Indonesia, also in 2023. I am currently assisted by WAIS as a Training Agreement Athlete.

Despite achieving some pleasing results, I have been impacted significantly over the past two years by sickness and injury. Despite these setbacks, I have remained focussed and motivated, and I believe that I am close to achieving some breakthrough results in the ITT and in road races in Australia and overseas.

There is significant cost associated with living in Western Australia. Due to training commitments, I cannot work enough hours to fund my cycling and I have long periods where I am not able to work due to travel. I am completely self-funded; I am one of the few WA cyclists at my level without a professional coach. Without financial support I must limit my travel to two or three interstate or Asian races in 2024. My competitors from the Eastern States can race for NRS teams, while living at home and are able to travel more often, with greater support from well-funded teams. This is a significant disadvantage, but it motivates me and gives me the belief that I have much more room to grow as an athlete.

My aim this year is to win the U/23 National Road Race which will be held in Western Australia after many years in Ballarat. To achieve this goal, I need to race against high level competition more often. I hope to sign for an NRS team that can support my journey and give me the exposure to racing that I need. This will require me to move away from home with all the associated costs.

After my time racing in Siak, I am motivated to do some more racing in Asia. I enjoy the attacking style of racing which suits me as a breakaway type of rider. I am planning to travel back to Indonesia for two months so that I can race around Indonesia. I enjoy the people and the culture, and I can do more racing, with less cost than racing in Australia.

My motivation to train hard and improve is greater now than it has ever been.  I am targeting the Oceania Road and Time Trial Championships along with the Tour de Brisbane with confidence. With financial support I would then like to target some NRS races, with the main goal of giving myself the best opportunity to perform at the 2025 National Road Race and ITT in Perth.

I have come from a small club in a small town and my parents had to drive 8 hours to Perth so that I could race even though I was not competitive against race hardened Perth riders. When I moved to Perth, I quickly developed and learned to suffer on the bike and excel in my sport. To move to the next level, I need the support to race against the best cyclists more often.
