AURugby is taking part in a University of Adelaide research project into concussion measurement and management and will be making a financial contribution towards the research costs, to support this important research and in recognition that our players are receiving significant individual benefits as part of that project for free. The research project is a longitudinal study relating microstructural brain changes with head impact kinematics and clinical concussion assessment metrics, focusing on sports with a high associated incidence of repetitive sub-concussive and concussive head impacts. AURugby has provided a cohort of players to undergo comprehensive baseline neurological screening, with head impact kinematics monitored throughout the season using HitIQ instrumented mouthguards. The Head Researcher, Dr Ryan Quarrington, is a biomechanical / biomedical researcher at the Centre for Orthopaedic and Trauma Research and the University of Adelaide’s School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Ryan’s research combines experimental models of neck trauma with dynamic finite element computational models of head impacts.
