Alex is a 15 year old wheelchair athlete from Strathalbyn, South Australia who was diagnosed in utero with a form of Spina Bifida. He is one of four children and has a “never say die” attitude. After a brief foray in tennis, Alex decided to try a team sport and landed on basketball. In three quick years he has shown a natural ability and love for the sport.
In 2022 Alex made his debut on a national stage for the first time at age 12, representing South Australia in the National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championship. He represented SA again in 2023 and in 2024 he was seen representing Western Australia due to SA not being able to field a team. The WA team was successful in their campaign and came away with the gold medal.
During this tournament Alex shone and was invited to the Australian Institute of Sport for a development camp. There he was scouted and invited to try out for the Australian men’s under 23 team, The Spinners. Alex was selected into The Spinners team and made his debut for the green and gold at the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation’s Asia Oceania Championship, which was held in Thailand. The Spinners were undefeated in the tournament, qualifying for the 2025 World Cup to be held in Brazil.
Alex caught the eye of the Australian coaches and upon his return, Alex was promoted to The Rollers team (Men’s National Wheelchair Basketball team). He is the youngest in the squad of 22 and this is the highest achievable level of this sport, as far as we can tell he is the youngest ever named. This is the team that will represent Australia in the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics, and this is Alex’s dream.
He has been recruited to play the 2025 season of the NWBL for the Darwin Salties and makes his debut when returning from Brazil world championships in June of 2025.
As a family we are seeking funding to help Alex reach his potential. Although most of his costs are covered by Basketball Australia, he requires a carer to travel with him on longer campaigns. There are also other opportunities that are not covered, such as National competitions and US College programs.
We are looking for the community to join us in supporting Alex to take advantage of these opportunities and achieve his goals. Money raised in this campaign will be used with associated costs and travel to achieve his paralympic dream.
