This two year project is a major upgrade of the only biathlon range in Australia.
Australian Biathlon, the National Federation for biathlon in Australia, is working closely with Mount Hotham Resort Management to build a range and surrounds that will allow international competition, training and racing facilities for athletes, together with disabled access. The project has increased capacity to 15 competition lanes, and includes widening of individual lanes to International Biathlon Union standard, major earth works, target infrastructure upgrade (including use of five-in-a-row biathlon target papers), firing point upgrade and disabled access, with a sealed rollerski track.
The upgrading will improve enormously the usage by Australian Biathlon members and the Australian Defence Nordic Biathlon Members during the winter season, also bringing to fruition a plan for the first-ever Australian Summer Biathlon Championships in Easter 2018. In addition, this upgrade allows disabled access to the general public during the summer months, including mountain bikers, walkers and those with small children and babies in prams/strollers, who may park in the adjacent car park and enjoy the amenity of an area not usually accessible to them.
The next phase of the Hotham Biathlon Arena development will be an upgrade in the facilities for members and visitors, focusing on improving the general access to shelter year round.
