The Canberra Kangaroos was founded nine years ago by a group of Afghan refugees. It entered into the annual refugee tournaments held around Australia.

In 2022, it joined Capital Football's State League as its own entity. With a committee and players made up primarily of those from refugee backgrounds, the club overcame many barriers to provide a place where language and culture was not a barrier to participation. Financial struggles are common for many of those from refugee backgrounds, with financial pressures from family members in their home countries, let alone the challenge of forging an existence in a brand new country. For many, the settlement process does not take months, it takes years, and there is a need for ongoing support to participate in the broader community. This is where Canberra Kangaroos plays an important role, and the club seeks donations to ensure that finances are never a barrier to participating in community sport.
