Green and Gold Athletes

Green and Gold Athletes

Many talented young athletes are denied the opportunity to pursue their dreams of representing Australia because they or their families can’t afford to fund the escalating costs of living, training and competition.

The requirement for international travel, equipment, coaching, food and accommodation can mean that green and gold dreams are out of reach, especially for athletes from remote, rural and indigenous communities.

Even for senior athletes who represent their country, the financial challenges are severe. According to a 2021 survey report from the Australian Sports Foundation:

… athlete incomes are well below the minimum levels mandated in other sectors...

…around 50% of national/international athletes (who participated in the ASF survey) reported earning less than $23,000 from all sources (well below the $39,000 national minimum wage (Fair Work Act)) – including their sport and external paid work.

… most Australian representative athletes receive minimal income from sport, but also relatively little from other employment (the need for which necessarily reduces their focus on their sport). They are therefore often forced to rely on their families (if financially able to do so) to support their athletic careers. This means that athletes whose families are unable to provide that financial support are disadvantaged and may well be lost to their sport for good.

Our Vision at Green and Gold Athletes Australia is to create a legacy where our Aussie athletes have access to sustainable funding opportunities and support from the time they earn their first green and gold tracksuit.
