At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Australia failed to qualify a team for the first time in modern Olympic history and due to the increasing economies of international sport and the higher importance on qualification requirements, this is something Gymnastics Australia is seeking support to ensure never happens again.
GA needs assistance to help provide our elite Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline female and male gymnasts with the opportunity to showcase their skills to the world.
Funds raised will go towards sending our athletes to much needed training camps and international events to gain valuable exposure and experience. At present, many of these athletes are self-funding just to try and get to these events and without additional support, will struggle to realise their Olympic and Commonwealth Games dreams.
Training camps and World Cup events are critical to athlete preparation and qualification for major international competitions including World Championships, the 2020 Olympic Games and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Gymnastics Australia's High Performance team is focussing on three key milestones
1 - World Championships 2019 (Target - $200,000)
2 - Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (Target - $500,000)
3 - Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games (Target - $800,000)
This three-phase approach aims to provide much needed funds for the immediate need of sending international medal-winning athletes to key events ahead of this year's World Championships - a key qualifying event for Tokyo 2020, a mere 9 months later.
Without immediate funding support, this will not be possible.
Each milestone event and the lead-up and qualification events in between over the next four years not only builds the athletes' capabilities to realise their Olympic dream and build towards Birmingham 2022, but showcases the grace, skill and power of Australia's best to the next generation of gymnasts across the country.
