Hugo's passion for dance began when he was 4, but it took 3 long years of persistence before he talked his parents into letting him "do that dancing with the girls".

Since his first Latin medal at 7 years old, through his first competition at 8, and now to making WA State Champions in all three styles at 12, persistence and dedication have been the foundations with which Hugo has continued his dance career.

Hugo, along with his fabulous partner, Joanna (11 years old) are current WA Juvenile Champions for Latin, Ballroom, and New Vogue. Together, they reached semi-finals at the Aussies in 2023 and 2024 is their last chance to reach a coveted spot in the finals in the Juvenile (under 13) category.

After school and on weekends, Hugo puts in around 10 hours a week dancing with his partner, plus around 5 hours per week alone - improving his skills. He sacrifices birthday parties, school events, and his beloved soccer games for dance competitions and practice, and is often one of the youngest dancers in the room; grabbing all opportunities to improve his craft with his whole heart.

Hugo's love for dance extends beyond competitions. In 2022, he embarked on Musical Theatre studies, showcasing his talent on stage. He's even co-authored a children's book about boys in dance - Hugo Dances - inspiring young children, especially boys, to go after their dance dreams.

All sales from Hugo's book go towards funding his lessons and travels to compete, along with shoes (although he's worn the same pants for 3 years, because he'd rather spend his dance budget on lessons!) He has put aside every single birthday present, dance comp win, and book sale dollar to make his way to Melbourne for Aussies this year. Together, Hugo and Joanna are also participating in joint fundraising efforts including always having a packet of lolly snakes on hand to sell!

Hugo has been encouraged to start this fundraising effort to allow his social media connections to donate a little bit to support his dreams to dance at Aussies in 2024. He spreads joy over his Instagram and always demonstrates the benefits of Dancesport to a wider community. He's so incredibly appreciative of any donations and hopes to do you all proud.
