About the project
My name is Jack Kelly and I am writing to seeking financial assistance in my endeavour to undertake a PhD at Oxford University in the United Kingdom (U.K) while simultaneously managing my rowing career at Oxford.
My academic journey started as a young boy growing up on a farm, with a family history of attendance at Prince Alfred College (PAC), a leading high school in South Australia. I was to be a fifth generation Kelly to attend the college, as was my brother, however due to financial difficulties our farm was sold and unfortunately my brother was unable to attend. Despite this, I did not give up my desire as a young boy who dreamt of attending PAC and despite some financial difficulty I was lucky enough to attend the college from 2008 until 2012.
Attending PAC was a privilege and one for which I am truly thankful. From an academic and sporting perspective I could not have been in a better environment, which has subsequently led to my love of academia and rowing. My time at PAC provided me the opportunity to attend Harvard University from 2013 to 2017 and eventually gain an undergraduate degree of a Bachelor of Science cum laude in Engineering Sciences, with a focus on Environmental Engineering.
From the beginning of my time at Harvard in 2013 I was on the prestigious Rowing team and was appointed Captain of the lightweight crew in my senior year. After graduating from Harvard, I have focussed on achieving my athletic goals and representing Australia at the highest level. I was a member of the National Training Centre for Rowing in Canberra, ACT in the 2017-18 season and gained selection onto the senior Australian Rowing Team for the 2018 season. This saw me compete in Austria and Switzerland in the World Cup regattas.
At Harvard I was encouraged to reach for the stars and chase my passions. To do this I applied to graduate school in an area of renewable energy so that I can make a meaningful difference to climate change. I have now been accepted into a DPhil (PhD) program at Oxford University in Engineering Sciences where I will study wind energy and fluid dynamics. This is a 3-4-year program and I am excited to continue studying and Rowing to make a difference to my community.
Understandably, this endeavour is an expensive one and I am currently seeking financial backing to be able to see this dream and the benefits to my community come to fruition.
During my studies at Harvard, my family was not in a position to financially support me due to some extenuating hardships and in the recent year, these hardships have only grown. My older brother unfortunately suffered from a brain tumour in recent years and my father’s recent diagnosis of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia has meant another main source of income has ceased due to my father’s inability to work.
Needless to say, it has been a difficult time for my family financially over the last few years and whilst I was able to source financial aid during my time at Harvard, my parents were also required to contribute funds, which was extremely difficult for them to do.
Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned circumstances I am unable to attend Oxford without financial support and additionally Oxford required a financial guarantee before attending, something my family is unable to support me with. With this in mind, I write to you seeking financial assistance to help undertake my studies at Oxford and would be grateful for any help you may be able to provide towards the cause.
To give you an idea of what I require, my first full-time year cost at Oxford will cost ~£22,500. I am currently exploring many different avenues for funding options and I ask for any support possible. I am very thankful to one of my previous schools, was has already made a contribution towards this study, to assist me in reaching my potential within my community, in both Rowing and Academics.
Due to my athlete status, I am registered as charity for fundraising purposes, which I believe means any donations towards this cause can also be tax deductable.
I have started my degree at Oxford in October 2018, as a part-time student, whilst I pursued my Olympic rowing dreams in Australia and now wish to switch to full-time status. I also hope that with your support, I am able to provide the necessary financial guarantee to Oxford by the end of July to switch to full-time status, and certainly any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for approaching this webpage with a generous heart to help an aspiring athlete and scholar in the community.
