Laura Thomson's 49erFX Campaign

Laura is member of the Australian Sailing Futures team member born and raised in Albury-Wodonga. Coming from a family of sailors, Laura has been on boats for as long as she can remember. Learning to sail in a Tasar with her Dad, she had competed at a state and national level by age 10 before moving into her junior and youth pathway classes. Finding success in the Laser, Laura won multiple female state titles and was invited as a training partner to join the Australian Youth Women's Radial team in the lead up to the 2016 Olympics. Additionally, she served as a training partner for the Cook Islands representative in her Rio preparations.

In 2016, Laura swapped into the youth 420 class finding great success at the 2017 World Championships in Fremantle coming away with 6th place after only 10 months in the boat. This opened a world of opportunities by qualifying her for the Victorian Institute of Sport and welcoming a transition into the Women's Double Handed Olympic Class which she has been competing in since 2018.

2022 saw Laura step onto the international Olympic class circuit and compete in Germany and Denmark, allowing for a massive leap forwards in skills and learnings. These skills and learnings resulted in Laura and her sailing partner at the time winning the 2023 Australian National title.

Currently, Laura has committed to training multiple times a week in the weight room as well as cross training on the bike or the rowing erg in order to be in peak physical shape for her role on the boat. On water, Laura and skipper Mina are based at the National Training Center in Sydney training with the Australian Sailing Futures Team.

The team is now excited to be headed over to take part in European summer circuit regattas in the Netherlands and France including the World Sailing Championships (also a Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier). Based in Europe from the start of June to the end of August 2023, Laura is excited to learn from the best and the world and bank as much experience as possible in pre-Olympic year.

Financial support will be directly forwarded to offsetting the significant costs associated with high level campaigning such as personal and boat transportation, coaching and training fees, equipment upgrades and more.

Any donation you make is tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt by email as soon as funds have been received by the Australian Sports Foundation.
