My name is Matthew May and I'm a 23-year-old Australian aspiring cyclist, originally from the United Kingdom, living in Perth Western Australia. After 11 years of competitive swimming and triathlon, where I represented WA at a national level, I have made it my goal to be a professional cyclist.
Throughout 2022 and 2023, I gained valuable experience racing in Belgium, and despite a considerable amount of bad luck with sickness and crashing, I demonstrated good potential in a highly competitive field. In WA alone, I’ve shown good form at the local level, placing 2nd over all at the 2023 Tour of Margaret River, where I also won the teams classification. At the end of the year, I also took out the Tuesday Night Criterium Series, with one win and two consecutive podiums.
At the start of 2024, I joined the Cycling Development Foundation to move my focus towards the NRS where I claimed three top 10 finishes at the Tour of Brisbane, Grafton to Inverell, and the u23 Oceania TT with a top 15 at the Melbourne to Warrnambool, which was my NRS debut. But, despite this, a knee injury and sickness got in the way of any more racing and training for the remainder of the year.
I started 2025 on a high with Perth’s first road nationals, where even with a lack of form, I managed to finish the Elite race in 22nd. I went straight into the ProVelo League from there, where I continued to struggle with fitness until the last two rounds, where some emerging form showed itself, with two top 10’s in the Q-Tour, finishing 7th on GC.
For the remainder of the year, I have signed on with “ Atom6 Decca”, an Australian registered continental team based out of Belgium. This enables me to race UCI level races, thus giving me the opportunities I’ve been seeking the last couple of years.
Although, signing with this team involves me being in Europe for well over 7 months, which comes at a huge cost, and with not yet having the appropriate visa, I am not able to work legally. With all travel, accommodation, food and general expenses involved, I am looking at well over $15,000 for the year alone.
Up until now, I have been completely self funded, working part time as much as possible outside of my training and racing. Being overseas this year means I am unable to rely on this anymore. The purpose of building this funding page is in hope to take the financial load off my shoulders, so I can focus sorely on my upcoming races. Every and any sort of donation is hugely appreciated, a simple share is more than enough.
Thank you for reading, please feel free to contact me at my email below, if you’d like some further information.
