About

Melbourne Ice Women is Melbourne's premier female representative team in the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL). The AWIHL provides the highest level of female hockey in Australia and runs in the off-season of the men’s Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The AWIHL first started as the Australian Women’s Showcase Series in 2005, and has grown into a strong competition since the inaugural ‘league’ format was introduced in 2008. The Melbourne Dragons entered the AWIHL in 2008, along side teams from Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. In the 2010-2011 season the Melbourne Dragons linked in with the Melbourne Ice to become the Melbourne Ice Women's Team. Since becoming MIW, the girls have won four out of the past five Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy, completing a three-peat in February 2016. They will be vying for their fourth Championship in a row at the start of the next season in October.
