The current jumps track at Len Shearer Reserve on Marcus Avenue, Booragoon requires replacement and extending to facilitate better competition and training environment. The track will be extended from 66.0m to 85.0m and the top jumps pit will be relocated to allow for the jumps track extension.
The track will have a concrete base (currently road base) with drainage and a 120mm protective edge and raised 20mm. The rubber track surface (20mm thick) will then be laid to form and flat and stable surface for athletes.
Watering facilities will also be installed during installation of the track to allow for the wetting of the pits, prior to completion.
As previously stated, the replacement track will allow for the separation of jumps competition and improve safety, with no athletes crossing over. The training environment will also be improved with the extended track, allowing sprints and hurdle to be completed at one end of the track and a jumps training session at at the other end of the track.
The cost of the jumps track project is $62,405.00 (Ex GST) and the Melville Athletics Centre is currently contributing $30,000.00. The City cannot provide any financial assistance as part of the Community Sports and Recreation Facility Fund (CSRFF) Small Grants application, but it is hoped that DSR will contribute as part of the CSRFF application. Noting the shortfall in funding to complete the replacement of Melville Athletics deteriorating jumps track, donation are requested to ensure the the jumps track is replaced before the commencement of the next Athletic season 2018/2019.
The new track will provide a great environment for Jumps/Sprints & Hurdles training and jumps competition, which will improve athlete performance, skills and participation.
