Moolap Primary School is committed to ensuring it provides an optimum school learning and play environment for all its students. Currently, we have 225 students enrolled in the school and 152 families supporting us. The school, established in 1878, has a long and proud history of servicing many Geelong families and has developed strong links to the local community.
We would like to build a covered area over the top of our basketball court which would allow sports lessons to be conducted as planned and outside during rainy and very hot weather periods. This space would enable students to experience fully the sport they are studying at the time unencumbered by space, sound and equipment restrictions experienced within the inappropriate current space. It would also encourage students of all abilities to make responsible, active choices for free time play.
Our school's lack of a covered/indoor sports area means that our sports units of learning are frequently interrupted on rainy/hot weather days when the sports teacher is forced to conduct sports lessons in our only available indoor area which currently houses students' lockers, is not soundproof and is surrounded by classroom windows on two sides.
Providing our students with a high quality sports program is a priority for our school and is underscored by the seniority and experience of our sports teacher. Our ability to maintain our emphasis on students pursuing healthy and active lifestyles year round, however, is limited by our lack of an appropriate undercover sports area.
Our school has undertaken several significant recent initiatives to encourage our students to make healthy free time decisions by building a low budget fitness track around our oval suitable for students of all abilities, scheduling before school fitness activities, and holding dedicated compulsory weekly sports lunchtime sessions for the whole school run by our senior students with teacher assistance. The creation of a modest outdoor covered space for students to build on our free time initiatives and undertake active play during recess and lunchtimes on rainy/very hot days would underscore to them the importance of remaining healthy all year round.
As well as supporting our sports classes and encouraging responsible free time activity choices, an undercover area would also benefit student safety. It would provide a dry, shaded, safe area for play on those days when the weather makes uncovered equipment and play sites slippery or more difficult for less able students to navigate.
