After two previously unsuccessful attempts to start a golf club in the township of Merimbula a public meeting was called in August 1965 resulting in the formation of the Pambula-Merimbula Country Golf Club. The name would later to be changed to Pambula Merimbula Golf Club (PMGC).

Following an application to the Crown Lands Department a lease was granted to the Club of 52 acres on which to build a clubhouse and golf course.

A small timber clubhouse and nine hole (sand greens) course was completed by volunteer labour the following year with the first competition held on 15 May 1966.

From these humble beginnings, the club developed into an impressive 27 hole course with a large modern clubhouse which has attracted many discerning golfers to the Far South Coast and is listed in the Top 100 Public Access Courses in Australia.

Over the years the club has hosted a number of interstate team events between New South Wales and Victoria and between the years 2003 – 2006 was the home of the New South Wales PGA Championship sponsored by Bega Cheese.

The Club enjoys the reputation of being one of the golfing highlights of the Far South Coast region of NSW offering what is widely regarded as the best 27 hole coastal golf course between Sydney and Melbourne.

The Pambula Merimbula Golf Club Foundation was established to support the development of the golf course and club facilities.
