Much loved Canberra based elite Basketball player John Mapiou was involved in a catastrophic car accident on Friday 26th May 2023. John sustained life altering injuries including a fractured skull, broken jaw, spinal fractures, multiple broken ribs and a perforated bowel.  John has a long road ahead of him to recover from his injuries and return to health and hopefully the ability to return to Basketball in time. John will be unable to work for many months and will require extensive rehabilitation support to physically recover from his accident. He is a much loved member of the Canberra Basketball community, a junior basketball assistant coach and an elite player with the Canberra Gunners NBL1 team.
