The Sunshine Football Club's (SFC) origins date back to 1942 with an U/18 team in the YCW Football League. While the Club grew to field both senior and junior sides in the YCW competition, all SFC sides (Junior and Senior)began competing in 1978 in the Footscray District League , today known as the Western Region Football League.
Originating in Sunshine, SFC moved to its current home at Kinder Smith Reserve Braybrook in 1962. Sunshine's players were typically from the Sunshine/Braybrook and surrounding areas. Juniors were typically made up from Club families and / or drawn from the surrounding schools.
The Sunshine/Braybrook area historically has been a typically working class community, with factories and railways being typical employers. The community was overwhelmingly Anglo Saxon, with large areas of Housing Commission and Railway provided accommodation. Sporting choices for the area youth was very limited and generally consisted of football, cricket, tennis and netball.
Today the Sunshine/Braybrook area is a truly multicultural society where the cultural preference for sport has changed to include sports such as soccer and basketball. The community has large Asian including Vietnamese and emerging African populations, whose sporting cultures and preferences are generally not aligned with Australian Rules Football.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE
The Club is seeking financial support to survive and ultimately develop and grow within the changed demography of the Sunshine/Braybrook area. Specifically the Club needs to :
- Grow the Club though broadening its community involvement to include business and sporting opportunities as well as social engagement as a Community Club.
- Continued on field success in WRFL Division 1 by :
- Recruitment of marque players to maintain competitiveness and member/community support
- Recruitment of talented coaching staff across all teams including seniors, juniors and ladies teams.
- Development of a Junior recruitment plan, particularly geared towards the Vietnamese and African families and feeder schools.
- Investment in quality equipment including playing uniforms, playing and training equipment.
- Membership growth through female participation including Junior girls football sides, and female netball sides.
