Why We Need Your Help

Today, the Balgowlah Bowling Club—affectionately known as 'The Bally Bowlo'—faces a critical challenge.

While patronage is on the rise, the timing of the Christmas holidays and a two-week period in April have significantly disrupted our momentum. Added to this, the combined effects of last year’s delays in securing an outdoor licence, significant increases in club running costs, and a slow start to this year’s trading have severely depleted the bowling club's cash reserves.

Because of these setbacks, we (the community) urgently need to raise $20,000 within the next week and to sustain the club's survival through the winter months $50,000 within the coming weeks. All donations are 100% tax deductible.

The club itself has pruned back expenses significantly

Our Story

Founded in 1956, the Bowlo was created by its members, for its members and the wider community. It has always been more than just a place for lawn bowls; it's been a vibrant hub for community connection and support. From hosting school fundraisers, weddings, and milestone birthdays to offering regular sessions of yoga, Tai Chi, live music nights, and trivia, the Bowlo has nurtured countless memories and friendships.

This club was built on a foundation of community involvement and inclusiveness—a tradition we're committed to upholding without the reliance on gaming machines.

Our enduring mission is clear: to celebrate and promote the game of lawn bowls and provide a welcoming space for everyone in the community.

What's at Stake

Bowling clubs are closing at an alarming rate across Australia*, yet they remain a critical part of our cultural fabric, deserving preservation for future generations. If we fail to meet our fundraising goal, the doors will close for good, and the site may be redeveloped, erasing a vital community asset.

* Just 128 bowls clubs left in Sydney after 51 clubs closed in the last decade

Our Commitment

With the funds raised, you will not only safeguard our operations through the winter but also empower us to extend our opening hours from Wednesday to Sunday every week. The Bowling Club is dedicated to enhancing our facilities and services to better cater to your needs.

To achieve this, we'll collaborate with industry experts such as grant writers and architects to secure grants specifically tailored for upgrading facilities like ours.

Moreover, we're excited to announce the formation of a community steering committee. This committee will serve as a vital platform for community members to provide feedback, helping us shape and realise our future vision together.

Additionally, stay tuned for updates on a community fundraising event later in the coming months, where we'll raise funds for specific improvements to the club. More details on this will follow soon.

Impact of Your Contribution

Your donation isn't just a lifeline—it's an investment in the future of the Balgowlah Bowling Club. Every dollar will directly fund essential improvements and operational costs, ensuring that the Bowlo remains a cornerstone for community gatherings, sports and support.

A Fork in the Road

Imagine a future where the Bowlo thrives—where our doors stay open wider and longer, welcoming more members of the community into our warm, vibrant club. Alternatively, envision the loss of this community treasure to redevelopment. Your support now will dictate which path we take.
