In July 2017, the Townsville Warriors U/15 Girls Team travelled to Canberra to compete in the Kanga Cup – the largest International Youth Football Tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. They competed in the Plate Competition, playing against newly promoted Division One and Division Two teams. Some 7000 players participated in the Kanga Cup this year.

They went to Canberra for the experience and opportunity, only to find that they became one of the red hot favourites to win their competition. They played against U/16 teams even though they were U/15 girls. The Canberra Times even featured the team in the Sports section of the paper during the competition They won the first five games but unfortunately lost their last two, just missing out playing in the finals. The team that beat them 2-1 in their last game ended up winning the Plate competition. They did the Warriors Football Club and Townsville proud in how they competed.

In 2018, the team will return to Canberra and compete again but this time, aim to win the Plate Competition. They will be a year older, even better players and they will be playing in the U/16 girls’ competition as an U/16 team. Participating in the Kanga Cup is far more than just being part of the competition. It will continue to keep the girls playing soccer for another year and develop their skills even further. The ultimate aim is to create stars of the future in a game that is male dominated. The Kanga Cup provides that incentive for each player to strive to be the best and together achieve success.
