When Valentina was 6 years old she commenced her journey with Taekwondo. Her parents are firm believers that a strong body means a strong mind, and it was their intention that entering her into Taekwondo at a young age would not only improve her fitness, but her mental strength too.

Her parents also wanted her to expand from the natural sporting ability she was already demonstrating with team and ball sports. They were seeking a sport which could not only challenge her physically, but one which would require a high degree of discipline and grasping of techniques such as one which teaches her how to defend herself and protect her personal space.

Fast forward 8 years to the present day, Valentina is now a Black Belt, regularly competing in tournaments, and improving at a rapid pace. This is what has ultimately led to the creation of this project with the ASF, whereby she recently competed and won tournaments in her division for both Cadet Nationals and National Selections, and with the latter resulting in her selection to represent Australia at the 2022 World Cadet Championships to be held in Bulgaria.

Valentina is not too dissimilar to other 14 year-olds. She's a social person who loves hanging out with her friends, keeping up to date with latest fashion trends, listening to music, using social media apps, and being a big sister. She's performing well academically, generally enjoys school, and has basic language skills in both Italian and Spanish.

Valentina's Club is called Forza Taekwondo. With guidance and mentoring from her coach John Masiello, Leads, and various other high achieving athletes at the club, she has been given many opportunities to compete in tournaments. She trains at the club 4 days per week from Monday to Thursday. On weekends when home in Canberra she also joins her team members for an informal Sunday morning run. There is no doubt that the fun, hard working, positive culture created at the club is why Valentina loves being there with her friends.

When not home, Valentina is often in Sydney training as part of the PPP (Performance Pathway Program), managed by Australian Taekwondo. Her invitation to train with the PPP is the reward for all the hard work she has done up to now. These training sessions step up the intensity and aim to prepare her specifically for the representative tournaments she competes in.

It goes without saying that the primary objective for this project is to raise Valentina's profile for garnering interest in helping to fund her expenses. As she is still a Cadet and participating in a sport that has limited funding, she relies solely on her parents for this. In getting assistance to cover expenses (mostly with travel and accommodation), her prospects of competing will improve, and hence her chance of winning and one day earning an official ranking as a Senior athlete. Who knows what is possible beyond this point - maybe a future Olympic Games (though still a dream at this stage :) ).

Thank you for your time.
