About the project
We want to build a traditional Venetian two-person sandolo to serve as a tangible link between Goolwa and Venice, Italy. The boat will feature in future events such as the Vogalonga Down Unda at Goolwa - the only Vogalonga outside of Italy - and the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival and eventually challenge other boats to race on the Goolwa Channel. Hopefully, it will be the first of many Venetian-style boats in S.A. and help to promote Venetian rowing locally.
Using traditional drawings acquired from a source in Venice, Straydog Boat Works of Mt Barker has created digital plans for a classic 2-person Venetian sandolo. From these digital plans, a kit for the boat will be made mainly out of marine ply and then assembled. Genuine Venetian oars and oarlocks will be imported from Venice to provide an unforgettable and unique rowing experience.
