The Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) commenced operation in July 1991 and is an independent, community based not-for-profit organisation. WRAS delivers pre-elite training programs throughout 19 Local Government areas in the Central West of NSW. Currently WRAS has Sports Talent Enhancement Programs (STEP) for basketball, cycling, golf, netball, netball umpires, softball and triathlon and Individual Talent Enhancement Programs (ITEP) for Lone Stars, High Performance, and Para-sports. We are currently introducing ‘Megan Callinan’ scholarships for athletes in small towns in outlying areas of our catchment, who would otherwise receive little or no sports development support. Our programs offer sports coaching, an internationally recognised strength and conditioning program, recovery, sports science and physical testing, along with personal development in areas such as time management, nutrition, psychology, time management, etc. Our Foundation is going to support several of our current programs. The Academy works closely with recognised State Sporting Organisations (SSOs), The NSW Institute of Sport, local and regional associations. All sports programs are endorsed by the SSO and the Academy program is an integral component of the SSO athlete pathway. WRAS programs focus on individual development within a squad environment, with the goal of providing each athlete with an opportunity to achieve a higher level of representation during the scholarship season.
