When a football club's change amenities were opened live on Brisbane radio, you know they have seen many winters.

Hickey Park was abuzz at the opening of our change rooms in 1964 - the first of their kind of any code in Brisbane. This historic occasion was attended by AFL Legend Ron Barassi Jr. and broadcast live on radio 4KQ. Fifty-years on, our change rooms are essentially unchanged, each featuring a urinal, three open showers and bare concrete floors. They no longer comply with the AFL Preferred Facility Guidelines, do not meet the needs of our female players and fall well-behind the amenities on offer at other QAFL clubs.

The good news is that we are making progress toward the construction of modern, unisex change amenities that will bring our players, coaches and visiting officials into the 21st Century. The project - costed at approx. $1.5 million - will see four change rooms built with modern medical and first-aid rooms, player recovery facilities, a gym and an elevated coaches box for use by the football club. The top floor will include community health rooms to be used by the Brisbane Inner North Sporting Community (BINSC).

The project has received fundings from all tiers of Government & the AFL. The funding commitments include:

  • $750,000 in Federal Government funding from Teresa Gambaro MP;
  • $500,000 in State Government funding from the Get Playing Plus programme;
  • $100,000 in Brisbane City Council funding from the Community Sport Clubs Grant Program; and,
  • $75,000 from the AFL Facilities Development Reserve programme.

Our club needs to raise $30,000 to complete the project. Please support this transformative project that will enable further growth of our female and junior programs, ensuring that Bendigo Bank Oval is an inspiring place to play for the next 50 years.
