Darwin Basketball Association received $8000 through Giving4Grassroots and used the funds on equipment, contractor wages, advertising and program giveaways.
At the beginning of the program all participants were given a ball and uniform, this also included a matching “team style” uniform for parents.
The basketball association ran an 8 week course to encourage participation in basketball across the whole family. By encouraging parents to take an active part in the program, the retention and sign up for the following sessions has been over 75%, compared to 53% when it was just the child participating and adult watching. The interest from parents in coaching and refereeing has also increased due to this program.
83 children participated in the first Darwin Basketball Association program with 126 already signed up for the next. The club’s expected targets were exceeded and since the programs inception player participation has grown and the number of parents volunteering to coach and referee has also increased.
