Tasmanian University Hockey Club (TUHC) is about participation and encouraging members to achieve their hockey potential. They aim to encourage participation of all abilities playing or administering hockey.
Their Sport4Everyone funded project, in partnership with Bayview Secondary College Years 7 to 12 aims to inspire students to take up hockey. Bayview College is a small, about 200 students, co-educational public school located in Clarence Plains, an economically disadvantaged area.
TUHC is concerned that hockey is becoming socially exclusive in Tasmania as it is mostly played in private schools. There are few public high schools and almost no public primary schools offering the sport to students and in Tasmania people in economically disadvantaged areas have almost no access to it.
Their project aims to introduce hockey to non-traditional sections of the community beginning with people in economically disadvantages areas, and expanding in future years to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people. They will engage with parents as part of the project to involve them in the aspirations of their children and embed cultural change.
