Mulgrave Combined Cricket Association: Practice nets and facility upgrades

The club needed to raise $50k to construct covered practice facilities to enable players to train out of the sun and rain. The covered pitches would also be used during wet weather for the junior teams.

Background

Located in Cairns QLD, the Mulgrave Cricket Club is subject to heavy rain and very hot days during the summer playing season. The Mulgrave Combined Cricket Association (MCCA) is home to a number of senior men and women teams and girls and boys junior teams.

Fundraising Need

The club needed to raise $50k to construct covered practice facilities to enable players to train out of the sun and rain. The covered pitches would also be used during wet weather for the junior teams. Through the Sports Foundation, the club was able to achieve their target.

Execution

MCCA used emails to the clubs past and present members as well as social media to promote the project. They also partnered with other organisations in addition to the Sports Foundation such as Rotary, Cricket Australia and QLD Cricket. Partnering with other organisations and groups proved to be highly successful. The club had dedicated committee members plan the project and set a 5-year plan in place back in 2013. The committee were supported by club members with business, planning and building experience.

Advice and Learnings

The traditional fundraising they did (raffles, dinners and BBQs) were somewhat successful but very labour intensive. The Sports Foundation had great opportunities to promote the project especially in the lead up to June 30 with the tax-deductible donations. The Sports Foundation enabled MCCA to attract support from the local communiity.

“The Sports Foundation provides great advice. Their are great opportunities to promote your project and especially in the lead up to June 30 to attract tax-deductible donations”
– Gavern Lovett, Secretary Mulgrave Combined Cricket Association
