My name is Eva Heron, I am a 16 years old girl of Aboriginal/South Sea Islander descent (Birri Gubba/ Vanuatu) and have been selected for the Australian Combined Schools U18G Football Team. I’ll be representing Australia in the USA at the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup 2019. It has been my dream to represent both my people and country on the international stage and this dream is almost a reality.

Although I was born in a small rural town (Cunnamulla) in South West Queensland, and raised in Cairns, I didn’t stop working hard or believing in my dreams. Sometimes I trained six (6) days a week for both my high school and club football teams. When the football season was over I then trained with a technical coach to improve my skills to reach my dream. I was fortunate to make numerous regional school age teams and I also represented Queensland football for at both school and club level. I did all this while maintaining an excellent academic standard.

This year I moved to Brisbane to chase my dream. I gained a scholarship in the Cavendish Road High football program. At school I have achieved success in both my academic and sporting endeavours and was named Sports Woman of The Year at Cavendish Road High School for 2018! I have achieved a high level of success in football at school (Cavendish Road High), at regional level (MetEast U19G), at club (Eastern Suburbs NPL U17G) and with the Qld U18G team.

At school I also participate in numerous cultural activities and have become a role model to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students/athletics, and non-Indigenous students, aspiring to reach their dreams. The trip to the USA will help me improve my football skills and it will develop my leadership, mentoring skills and public speaking. All these activities will give me the confidence to share my story with other students.

I didn’t do this alone and I thank my current and former team mates, their parents, teachers and coaches who have assisted me on this journey. Mum and Dad have also given a lot of their time and finances by taking me to football competitions across the state. Leaving my siblings and nieces & nephews at home while I chased my dream. My brothers still can’t believe that I made the Australian team!

I am seeking support from the community to assist me be part of Australian football team. The two (2) week trip to the USA in April 2019 includes, a week in San Francisco for trials (training & games) before flying to Texas for the second week to compete in the Dallas Cup. This is a large youth (boys and girls) football competition and it also gives the opportunity to showcase my skills to prospective football scouts from leading American universities.

My parents have, through the Australian Sports Foundation, created a sports based ‘go fund me’ page (but it’s not using Go Fund Me!!). The bonus of using the Australian Sports Foundation is that all donations are tax deductible so you can recoup some of your donation at tax time!

All donations, no matter how small, will help me represent Australia at the peak of my chosen sport at my age. For businesses, community groups and for larger donations, I would love to 'give back' by offering to give a presentation at the end of my participation in the World Cup. This will help you, your group or organisation understand how important your donation was to me and my aspiration to be part of this wonderful opportunity!
