Joey Mawson

Joey Mawson

Joey Mawson is a 23 year-old Australian who hails from the Sydney suburb of Hinchinbrook. He started his career at the age of 7 in karting in 2003. Throughout the ensuing ten years he won three Australian Championships, a round of the CIK-FIA World Under 18 Championships and finished runner-up at the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in the UAE.

Joey stepped up to car racing with an entry in the 2014 French Formula 4 Championship where he won on debut before placing fourth in the overall Championship standings, having missed one round. He then moved up to the German FIA Formula 4 Championship where he finished third in 2015 having completed a full season.

For 2016 Joey led the entire eight-round German FIA Formula 4 Championship and won by 52 points ahead of Mick Schumacher. Throughout the year he recorded 10 race wins and finished on the podium in 16 of the 24 races contested. In the off season Joey has competed in the MRF Challenge where he finished on equal points as the Champion before being awarded runner-up on a countback.

In 2017 Joey took another step up to compete in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship. This was a tough year for Joey. Throughout the year Joey showed glimpses of his true potential as he battled for the Rookie Championship alongside McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris. He finished fourth in the Rookie standings after scoring points in 27 of the 30 races. His maiden outright podium came in round eight of the Championship at the Nurburgring.

In 2018 Joey joined the Arden Motorsport outfit to make the step up into the GP3 Championship. Joey finished on the podium at both the Paul Ricard and Russian rounds of the championship.

Last year Joey switched from single-seaters to the Porsche Supercup Category being one of three drivers with Team Australia. Joey finished on the Rookie podium for every race for the entire season and at Monza achieved an outright podium finish.

Whilst Joey has some support from the PODIUM group to run the Porsche car, it is expensive to travel to the events in Europe. Joey also needs a new helmet each year, along with other driving equipment.

With all racing having been on hold due to the pandemic, Joey is proposing to compete in Porsche Carrera Cup Germany in the final months of 2020 with a view to using this as preparation for a full on assault of the Porsche Supercup 2021 championship season.
