AUA – Empowering All Abilities Day and Bike Precinct Launch

Date:  Sunday 8th December (10-2pm), celebrating International Day of People with Disability

Location: Evatt Primary School, Canberra

Organised By: Abilities Unlimited Australia (AUA)

About the Event:

Breaking Barriers and Building Futures

The AUA Empowering All Abilities Community Day aims to eliminate obstacles that prevent children with disabilities from engaging in sports and recreation. These obstacles often include inadequate specialised support, a lack of adaptive equipment, and inaccessible facilities, leading to physical inactivity, social isolation, and missed developmental opportunities. This event is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment where every child can participate in sports, active recreation and community inclusion, fostering their growth and joy.

The event features a wide variety of adaptive sports, community engagement, and recreational activities, all tailored to meet the needs of children of all abilities. Specialised coaching and adaptive equipment are provided to ensure that every child can safely and confidently participate, enhancing their physical fitness, wellbeing, communication, and social skills. Families have the opportunity to connect with local sporting clubs and community services, facilitating long-term involvement in inclusive sports and recreation.

Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to meet para-athletes, who are inspiring role models. These athletes will share their stories and experiences, demonstrating the possibilities within para sports and encouraging children and families to explore these pathways. This connection aims to inspire children and families, highlighting that every child has the potential to achieve great things.

Launch of the AUA All-Abilities Bike Precinct

A highlight of the day is the launch of the AUA All-Abilities Bike Precinct, featuring the newly developed Road-safety Learn-to-Ride Track. This initiative marks a significant milestone in promoting inclusivity in the ACT, providing a safe space for children of all abilities to learn and practice cycling. The precinct is more than just a cycling area; it is a comprehensive learning environment where children can gain essential road safety skills, fostering independence and confidence.

This project is the result of a collaboration involving the ACT Government Sport and Recreation, Evatt Primary School, AUA, and a team of dedicated professionals, including engineers and designers from Indesco. The Bike Precinct is designed to be a cornerstone of the community, integrating educational programs on road safety and environmental stewardship. It stands as a testament to the community's commitment to inclusivity and well-being, offering a dynamic space for recreation, learning, and social connection.

Significance of the International Day of People with Disability

The AUA Empowering All Abilities Community Day aligns with the International Day of People with Disability, a day dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities worldwide. This alignment amplifies the event's impact, highlighting the global commitment to fostering accessibility and equal opportunities. By celebrating this day, we not only honour the achievements of people with disabilities but also advocate for a society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can participate fully and equally.

This event is a powerful demonstration of the transformative power of inclusive sports and recreation. It underscores the critical need for accessible facilities and adaptive programs that enable children with disabilities to engage, learn, and thrive. By participating, we are not merely spectators but active contributors to a movement that seeks to break down barriers and promote inclusivity in all facets of life.

The Importance and Value of the Event

The AUA Empowering All Abilities Community Day is a unique and essential event that embodies the spirit of inclusivity and community engagement. It is a rare opportunity for children with disabilities to experience the thrill of sports, active recreation, community activities and the joy of play alongside their peers. For many families, this event is a place of hope, providing access to resources, support systems, and a welcoming community that embraces diversity.

The inclusive nature of the event promotes not only physical health but also emotional wellbeing and social connections. It provides children of all abilities with a platform to build confidence, develop essential life skills, and feel a sense of belonging. This experience can be a turning point, inspiring lifelong participation in physical activities and fostering a healthier, more inclusive community. The event also serves as an educational platform, where attendees can learn from para-athletes and discover the pathways available in para sports, broadening their horizons and aspirations.
