About the project

Australian LGBT Ice Hockey’s main goals are:

  • Be champions for diversity and inclusiveness in both Australian ice hockey and broader sporting community
  • Build a strong LGBT+ community across all levels of Australian ice hockey
  • Help grow ice hockey participation around Australia
  • Promote health and wellbeing through participation in the sport

Initially formed by a number of Melbourne players, the idea expanded Australia-wide after discussions with interstate players also interested in the idea.

In March 2019 we formed Australia’s first LGBT+ inclusive club in Melbourne, the Southern Lights Ice Hockey Club, and in early 2021 we welcomed Sydney's Harbour Lights Ice Hockey Club to our family.

Ice hockey currently has participants from all parts of the LGBT+ community in Melbourne and Australia. The community is accepting, close-knit and passionate about the sport, and loves to welcome both new and experienced hockey players and fans to join them.

Australian LGBT Ice Hockey will use the money raised through fundraising to:

  • provide financial assistance to new inclusive teams and clubs
  • purchase equipment for new players to use while they acquire their own set
  • develop players' skills through training and subsidising lesson fees
  • promote awareness and education around ice hockey's LGBT+ community at all levels of Australian hockey

We know the positive effects that sport, team activities and community can have on physical and mental wellbeing, and we strive to create a safe space for the LGBT+ community where they are supported and free of any negative experiences.

Through our fundraising partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation, donations to this cause are tax-deductible.

Please donate today and help us in our mission to make ice hockey a positive and safe experience for everyone in our community.
