Fliss Wilson-Haffenden - Junior Worlds 2023

I am lucky enough to have been selected to compete in the Junior Road and Track World championships in 2023. Whilst this is a massive goal of mine, costs associated with participating in the championship are extremely high and any support would be greatly appreciated.

About me

I am 17 years old from Hobart, Tasmania and began cycling during covid in 2020. After attending a TIS talent identification program, my cycling journey was kick started into action. I am a member of the Hobart Wheelers cycling club and currently ride for the Tasmanian Institute of Sport and Team BridgeLane, whilst also completing my year 12 studies.

After competing in my first road race less than two years ago, I placed fourth in the criterium and time trial at Road Nationals 2022. Unfortunately, due to a broken wrist I was unable to compete at Track Nationals, losing the chance to challenge for World Championship selection. I did, however, get my first taste of Europe, representing Australia in the Nations Cup in France. This experience fostered my love of the sport and drove me toward big goals for 2023.

In January I competed in Road Nationals, placing second in the criterium and winning the national championship in both the road race and time trial. I then went on to compete in my first Track National Championship, winning the individual pursuit and setting a new Australian record. The next week, I raced the Oceania Championships, again winning the individual pursuit and breaking my own record in a time of 2.19.952, becoming the first U19 Australian sub-20. Later in the week, I raced the team pursuit as a member of the Australian team, taking first place and breaking the national record by over four seconds. Concluding my Oceania campaign, I won the time trial championship on the road, finishing just three seconds behind the elite winner, backed up by a second place in the junior road race.

As the only junior female selected for both championships, I am extremely honored to be able to represent my country on the highest stage for junior cycling. Ultimately, I hope to conclude the year with a rainbow jersey.

About the Championships

In July I will travel to Belgium with a group of fellow Australian junior endurance cyclists where we will undertake a training camp in preparation for worlds. Here, we will compete in kermesse style racing and acclimatize to the European peloton.

Road Worlds are to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in the opening two weeks of August as part of the first UCI all discipline World Championships. I will compete for the road race and time trial titles.

Finally, my campaign concludes at the Track World Championship in Cali, Colombia. Events will take place from August 23-27, with my focus being the individual and team pursuits.

I would not be in this position without the network of supporters I am lucky enough to be surrounded by and am beyond grateful for the encouragement I have received thus far. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the cycling community and hopefully inspiring fellow young girls to explore the world of bike riding!

Thankyou in advance for your support. X
