My name is Sasha King, from Perth, Western Australia. I am a 21-year-old female and I have been an ice hockey goal tender for 7 years. I am currently playing in my 4th season for Perth Inferno in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League – this is the highest level of women’s ice hockey within Australia. I am also aiming to be re-selected to play on the Australian Women’s National Team in the upcoming 2025 IIHF World Championships Div2B. If selected, this will be my third year representing our country at the World Championships.

Ice hockey is my passion and I am absolutely driven to be a strong contributing factor in the success of both of these teams that I am fortunate to play on. For Perth Inferno, I want to be a part of the team that wins our first championship, and for the Australian Women’s National Team, I am committed to doing everything I can to play a part in winning gold and achieving promotion to the next division.

I constantly seek challenges locally to push my development further for the purpose of being the very best goalie I can be for the national team. I also actively seek goalie-specific training locally (when available) and internationally – this is with coaches who are currently goalie coaching teams in the top IIHF division. The reason for this is so that I am learning techniques and training to the expectations of that top division. When the Australian Women’s National Team achieves promotion to that division, I will be well prepared! In 2024, I self-funded a trip to Canada where I attended an elite goal tending camp in Canada and trained alongside PWHL goal tenders Kristen Campbell, Corrine Schroeder & Kayle Osborne. This was such an amazing experience as well as one which pushed me in my pursuit of development.

As an athlete who is dedicated to the sport and prioritising the unique training that a goal tender requires means that I have to find the best balance between work obligations (I work a casual job and am currently building up my own business) to allow me the flexibility to prioritise a healthy lifestyle and my ice hockey commitments at the highest level. It can be tricky though, as the costs to access the challenges, training, represent on these teams and also have the appropriate equipment comes at a significant financial cost!

·        My team fees (local, AWIHL, state rep, national rep) add up to around $11,000 annually.

·        My equipment total value is around $11,000 as well, and requires replacing approximately every 3-4 years, which I do progressively, so that works out to around $3,000 per year.

·        My private coaching costs over the last 12 months, including international training alongside PWHL goaltenders, exceeded $10,000.

·        This puts my expenses for ice hockey at around $24,000 per year, conservatively!

I would like to invite you to consider joining my team by helping me out with some financial assistance. Donations above $2 are tax deductible. Any donations are so very gratefully received and for the short term will go directly to my team fees for Perth Inferno and also the attendance at 1 or 2 high performance goalie camps being held by Ice Hockey Australia in preparation for prospective Australian Team representation in 2025.

I’d also love to see you at a game, cheering us on, or joining in through social media and our livestreamed games. If you do come to a game, please come and say hello to me! I love to share the joy of this amazing sport!

My teammates and I want to build a dynasty of strong, successful female athletes that are role models and an inspiration to all the young people who see a game of ice hockey and wonder if that could be them one day. YES! ABSOLUTELY!
