Rod Marsh MBE - Spirit of Cricket Wattle Meeting Place

Rod Marsh MBE - Spirit of Cricket Wattle Meeting Place

In recognition of Rod Marsh’s significant contribution to cricket here in South Australia and further afield, after consultation and collaboration with the Marsh family, the South Australian Cricket Association, in partnership with Adelaide Oval, are seeking donations to establish a permanent memorial to the Spirit of Cricket, inspired by “Bacchus” at the Adelaide Oval. Rod was the epitome of the Spirit of Cricket.

The focal point of this architecturally designed (Rosella Badios) meeting place will be a Golden Wattle tree, paying homage to Rod’s legacy of introducing the Australian Test team’s celebratory song “Under the Southern Cross I Stand”. The song, which contains the line “a sprig of wattle in my hand”, was sung with passion and pride by Rod, in chorus with his beloved teammates throughout his international career.

In addition to the Golden Wattle, and while subject to change, it is proposed the site will contain a seating area to ensure it becomes a key meeting place within the Adelaide Oval. An image of Rod soaring like a spirit taking a spectacular catch will adorn the location, as well as references to and possibly the lyrics of “Under the Southern Cross I Stand”. Finally, a bronzed set of his wicket keeping gloves, as if Rod had casually left them there before joining his teammates for a rousing rendition of the now famous victory chant.

Pending several variables, including fundraising activity, it is proposed this special and deserved tribute to our late friend, colleague, teammate and mentor to so many, will be unveiled and officially opened prior to the commencement of play on Day 1 of the 2022 – 23 Adelaide Test Match against the West Indies on Thursday 8 December 2022.
