Sarah Hoffman - Team Australia Challenge

Sarah Hoffman - Team Australia Challenge

I am a 21-year-old sailor that is incredibly passionate and focused toward bringing home a win for Australia in the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup. To be a part of the first ever Women’s America’s Cup is a historic moment that will show the exceptional standard and capacity of female sailors around the world.

Growing up on Lake Macquarie and sailing out of Belmont 16ft Sailing Club provided the ideal training grounds for learning to sail. Since the age of seven, I have absolutely loved sailing, being on the water, and using the wind and waves to go as fast as possible. A natural competitor, I have been competing at a national and state level since the age of 11 and have been representing Australia on the international stage since I was 15 years old. Campaigning on the Nacra 17 since 2020, my passion for sailing has intensified with access to foiling technology, going faster than ever, and the opportunity to sail against the world’s best.

The mixture of mental and physical demands of sailing coupled with facing a harsh and variable environment makes sailing a complex and demanding sport to compete in. Combining these variable elements and working as a team towards a united goal makes success an incredibly satisfying accomplishment. In the Team Australia Challenge team, I am amongst the role-models I looked up to as a young female sailor. To be amongst such experienced sailors intensifies my drive to constantly improve, learn, and grow and makes me determined to inspire the next generations of female sailors.

Marked by a boxing kangaroo on the mainsail, the first ever boat I sailed was a Pelican called “Aussie Power”, inspired by Australia’s win in the 1983 America’s Cup in Australia II. The legacy of this historical achievement, led by John Bertrand, is something I’ve looked up to as the pinnacle of sailing. The win represented Australia’s drive and tenacity to go after what we want, and work with what we have. To have the opportunity to continue Australia’s legacy on in the America’s Cup and work towards winning the first ever Women’s America’s Cup is an incredibly special opportunity. The event marks a historical moment for sailing as a sport, inspiring future generations of aspiring female sailors that a pathway to the pinnacle of sailing is open to them.
