The Metropolitan Golf Club Foundation

The Metropolitan Golf Club Foundation

It is 25 years since our establishment through the foresight and generosity of Club Members. As Chairman of the Foundation, I wish to remind all of you how the Foundation has flourished to become the envy of many other golf clubs.

I believe all Members should be proud of the achievement. If you are not already a Member of the Foundation, I would hope you will consider how you can help now and in the future. Our magnificent clubhouse is a permanent example of how the financial support of the Foundation enables Metropolitan to maintain its standing in Australian golf and admired throughout the world when seen on television.

We are in a very sound position but we must maintain our standards at the highest level while many golf clubs are under pressure to retain membership and their financial stability.

Even when considering making a donation through the Foundation, there is a way of further assistance I would like you to consider and that is a bequest to the Club.

The Foundation has already benefited from bequests in the estates of some of our Club Members. A bequest is the ultimate gift. It is a lasting contribution towards the ongoing financial strength of the Club we cherish.

I trust you will continue to enjoy the pleasures of Metropolitan. We are so fortunate to share such an outstanding golf course and great camaraderie.

The Metropolitan Golf Club Foundation was established on 22 August 1990 to raise funds for the benefit of The Metropolitan Golf Club.  It evolved from a determination that the standards of the Club must be maintained and realisation that to do this the Club must rely on its own community. Through the foresight and generosity of preceding generations, The Metropolitan Golf Club has grown into a priceless national treasure.  It is a matter of Club pride that we not merely preserve the course and its surrounds, but enhance it where possible for the enjoyment of future generations by drawing on the great reserves of goodwill and resources which have always existed at Metropolitan. The Foundation provides a permanent fund to be administered independently from the Club administration to help preserve, develop and maintain the standards and facilities at Metropolitan and in particular:

  • To create opportunities for the Club to attract and retain the continued interest and financial support of members.
  • To solicit donations and gifts to or for the benefit of the Club from members and from any other source deemed appropriate for the purposes of The Foundation.
  • To attract and encourage bequests, legacies and all forms of deferred gifts.
  • To raise finance for the acquisition of land or buildings or other facilities.
  • To provide financial assistance for the acquisition of works of art, furniture and furnishings.
  • To augment and assist the Club to achieve its desired programme of capital expenditure.

There are many more ways the Foundation has assisted the Club through large amounts and small in the past and present. Some recent and ongoing examples are:

  • Contributed $500,000 to assist with the broader capital projects of the Club, including the planning for the Golf Service Wing
  • It has assisted the membership applications of junior golf scholarship holders who nominated to join with part-funding of entrance fees. The recent success of all our representative teams is something we can all be proud of.
  • There has been annual financial support for the Metropolitan development program for golf skills established by seven-time Club champion Doug Francis.
  • In 2005 the Foundation purchased the Roger Kemp artwork which features in the Clubhouse and it has conservatively trebled in value in the ten years since.
  • The boardroom table manufactured from the old Norfolk pine tree on the lawn outside the old clubhouse was funded by the Foundation for more than $16,000. The Foundation has also funded new Clubhouse signage.

The Foundation has continued its support of the Club by subsidising the Junior Entrance Fees of Scholarship holders, plus the continued funding of the Metropolitan Development Program. The Metropolitan Development Program was set-up by Club member and seven-time Club Champion, Doug Francis. The program is now in its fifth year and includes regular sessions conducted by former Club Professional, Stuart Leong, who has become well-known for the “Shots To Hole” program that he co-founded.
