FAQs
Common questions from donors
How can donations to sport be tax-deductible?
The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) is an item 1 Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) specifically listed in the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Subdivision 30-B, s30.90). The ASF was provided with this DGR status to raise funds for the development of sport at all levels in Australia. Through this status, donations of $2 or more to ASF in support of approved fundraisers or campaigns are tax-deductible.
How much tax will I get back for my donation?
The amount of a tax deduction a donor will receive for a donation to a DGR, like the Australian Sports Foundation, depends on the income tax bracket they’re in.
The ATO website is always a good reference tool:
Personal donations: https://www.ato.gov.au/Rates/Individual-income-tax-rates/
Business donations: https://www.ato.gov.au/Rates/Company-tax/
Some charities have a calculator that will work it out for you (e.g. https://www.care.org.au/appeals/tax-calculator/) however we can’t guarantee the accuracy of this.
When will I receive my donation receipt?
Donations take 1-2 business days to be reconciled by our Finance team, you should receive a tax-deductible receipt shortly after this.
The timing of receipts can also depend on the payment method a donor has used for their donation:
Credit card/Apple Pay/GooglePay= instantly
EFT = generally within 1-2 business days of payment*
Direct Debit = generally within 3-4 business days of payment
Cash/cheque = generally within 2-3 business days of payment*
*provided the donor used their unique donation reference number. This reference number is included in the email with the ASF bank account details when an eft pledge has been created. Using this reference number as the description in the bank transfer is essential to enable the ASF to match their payment to their donation record.
Note: The format of their reference number will be formatted like DON-XXX XXX or TRAN XXX XXX, depending on whether the user is on the new or old platform.
As our receipts are system-generated, we recommend checking your junk or spam folder. If you still haven’t received a receipt after 3 business days of making your donation and finalising your payment, please contact our Support Team.
Will my full donation be allocated to the campaign I chose to support?
The ASF is a small non-profit organisation. To cover the operating costs of running a fundraising platform, and to provide support to our organisational and individual fundraisers, we retain 5% of online donations and 6% of offline/manual donations. We distribute the rest to sporting projects taking donor preferences into account.
That means 95 cents of every dollar you donate goes straight to developing sport in Australia.
Paying by credit card or Apple Pay/Google Pay will incur merchant processing fees, however, you have the option to “top up” your donation when donating online so that more money gets to your chosen project.
