What can I fundraise for?
The Australian Sports Foundation’s charter, and what we have our tax-deductible status for, is to raise money for the development of sport in Australia.
For a community club, this could include:
Facilities (capital works, maintenance, and hire/lease)
Equipment (purchase and maintenance/repairs)
Coaching (payment of staff or contractors)
Travel (training camps, competitions etc)
Hardship funds (paying rego fees and other costs for players experiencing financial hardship)
Medical costs, player welfare programs
General operational costs (i.e. to “keep the lights on”)
‘Future Fund’ (i.e. to ensure the sustainability of the club into the future)
For an athlete this could include:
Equipment and uniform (purchase and maintenance/repairs)
Travel (training camps, competitions etc)
Medical costs, physio & conditioning
Coaching
These lists are not intended to be exhaustive.
If you have a project in mind that you’re not sure is eligible, please contact our Support Team.
However, generally, if the intention and outcome of the project is to develop Australian sport in some way, you should be good to go!
How can I sign up?
Our online sign-up process is simple and only takes 5-10 minutes.
What difference does tax deductibility make?
Any donation to the ASF of $2 or more is tax deductible. The ability to claim a tax deduction means that the cost of donating to a project on the ASF platform is substantially reduced (typically by 32% to 45% depending on the donor’s tax rate).
For example, if a donor donates $1,000 to the ASF for your project, they will receive a tax refund of $450 (based on the assumed top income tax rate of 45%), and therefore the actual cost of that donation will only be $550.
What are the benefits of fundraising with the ASF?
When you sign up with the Australian Sports Foundation you get:
access to our unique tax-deductible sports fundraising platform, which allows you to set up campaigns and track live donation information,
a personalised campaign page with an online donation form,
access to tools, tips and templates to make your fundraising easier,
fortnightly distribution of the funds you raise, and
other revenue-raising opportunities such as rebates, grants and a sports charity raffle.
How long does it take to set up a fundraising campaign?
Once you’re signed up with the ASF you can create and activate a fundraising campaign on the ASF platform in a matter of minutes! All you need is a few details about what you’re fundraising for and at least one image (so we can create a campaign page and online donation form for you).
Once all the details have been completed, submitted and approved, it will be live and ready to accept donations immediately!
Donations
How can donations to sport be tax-deductible?
The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) is an item 1 Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) specifically listed in the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Subdivision 30-B, s30.90). The ASF was provided with this DGR status to raise funds for the development of sport at all levels in Australia. Through this status, donations of $2 or more to ASF in support of approved fundraisers or campaigns are tax-deductible.
Will my full donation be allocated to the campaign I choose to support?
The ASF is a small non-profit organisation. To cover the operating costs of running a fundraising platform, and to provide support to our organisational and individual fundraisers, we retain 5% of online donations.
Paying by credit card or Apple Pay/Google Pay will incur merchant processing fees, however, you have the option to “top up” your donation when donating online so that more money gets to your chosen project.
Can I donate to a campaign as a business or organisation?
Anyone can donate to a campaign, including individuals, businesses, trusts and foundations.
For some campaigns and individual fundraisers, where there are clearly identified beneficiaries, the ATO has some restrictions on donations from relatives and associates.

Platform and Fees
What is the ASF platform?
As Australia's dedicated sports fundraising platform, we help clubs and athletes unlock tax-deductible donations, making it easier to raise more funds while spending less time on admin.
When you sign up, you will get access to the ASF platform, which allows you to set up fundraising campaigns, track your live donation activity and access tools, tips and templates to make your fundraising easier.
We will also give you access to other revenue raising opportunities such as rebates, grants and a sports charity raffle.
Does the ASF charge any fees?
Our platform is free to use – there are no setup or account fees involved! As the ASF is a small non-profit, we do retain a small percentage of all donations to cover the operating costs of running a fundraising platform and providing support to every fundraiser. To cover these costs, we retain 5% of donations.
More information about our retention and processing fees can be found in our Terms & Conditions.
How long does it take to receive donated funds?
The ASF distributes funds raised on a fortnightly basis. This is commonly referred to as a grant payment. The ASF considers donors' preferences before releasing grant monies.
The only action required as a fundraiser, is to ensure your bank account details are up to date and that you have no overdue acquittals. You can update/edit your bank account details in the platform under 'Account' on the top right-hand side of the homepage.
Donations processed 1-15th are remitted on the last day of that month, and
Donations processed 16-30th/31st are remitted on the 15th of the following month.
Note: donations processed on weekends may not be included in a grant round i.e. a donation made on the 13th of the month on a Saturday may miss the processing window.
