ANU teams often have significant turnover from year to year and consequently their level of competitiveness varies along with some potential ANU students joining other clubs. Most other clubs have professional paid coaches while ANU has generally relied on volunteers in the past. In addition, ANU Sport has reduced the base annual grant available for hockey and while additional funds can be sourced from ANU Sport for things like facilities and coaching costs it is certainly not guaranteed. ACT Hockey has also increased their costs for team entry, umpiring and training field hire. Sponsors have been a great help in recent years but are also not guaranteed from year to year. As such an additional source of funding is needed to sustain the club long term.

Increased funding will allow:

1.      Payment for a recently appointed high-performance coach to improve player and coaching performance for ANU Men. The expectation is that he will coach for a number of years.

2.      Support the development of coaches through all ANU teams.

3.      Further development of a high-performance capability for the ANU Women, including elite-level coaching and player support.

4.      Improved access to high quality fields for training and development for both men’s and women’s clubs.

5.      Subsidy for fees to ensure ANU hockey, and its community, can stay cost competitive.
