Horse riding is viewed by some as an elitist sport. The reality is participants are passionate about horses and forgo many of the niceties of life to support their commitment. Equestrian pursuits at a grass roots level are dominated by female participation and are frequently overlooked for financial assistance because of misconceptions or lack of public awareness.

Australian horse riders excel at international competitions and are renown for their ability and horsemanship. These skills start at the grass roots level from attendance at local clubs and working up through the levels as riders compete to fulfil their ambitions. There are three grass roots clubs at Merricks Station Grounds.

Merricks Station Grounds is a Shire owned equestrian facility, run by a local volunteer Committee of Management. It is home to Merricks Saddle Club, Peninsula Quarter Horse Association and Merricks Pony Club as well as occasional hiring by other local clubs. The wonderful facilities provided at the Grounds reflect the passion members have for their sport and are the result of members and their families volunteering to achieve their goals - quality, safe equestrian facilities accessible to all ages and abilities. Members ages range from 6 to over 80 years with all levels of ability from beginner to high competition level. All three clubs have members with challenges who are encouraged to participate. When not being utilised by the resident clubs, the Grounds are hired out to individual keyholders or external clubs and organisations.

The future of equestrian facilities is the provision of a roofed structure or indoor facility over a riding arena. Many private land owners are investing in such developments to provide certainty and safety for their horse riding pursuits, regardless of weather conditions. It is time for public facilities to respond to this demand for the local equestrian community.

The provision of a roof, 88 x 40m, over the large enclosed arena will maximise opportunities for horse riding by all who use the Grounds and the broader equestrian community. It will also provide surety for competitions, clinics and rallies which are organised months in advance. A roof structure provides protection in all weathers - particularly in the summer months from sun damage and heat exhaustion and in the winter months from cold and wet conditions for both rider and horse. It also provides a safe riding surface which increases confidence and ability.

A roofed arena will increase utilisation of the Grounds with more demand for access through increased club memberships and increased demand from the equestrian community for keyholder access.

Your financial assistance with a tax deductible donation, through the Australian Sports Foundation, will help many horse riders, particularly women and children, increase their riding opportunities and help to fulfil their dreams safely. Thank you.
