The Merricks Station Grounds equestrian facility in Mornington Peninsula Shire is a vital haven for horse riders and the three equestrian clubs based there. Originally the Merricks Railway Station which transported livestock and fresh produce to city markets, the Grounds fell into disuse and became overrun with vegetation after the railway line was closed in 1952. In the early 1980's, local families transformed the area by cutting trails through the wilderness for their children's horse riding activities, leading to the establishment of the Merricks Saddle Club. Over the years, the Peninsula Quarterhorse Club and Merricks Pony Club joined, contributing to the development of excellent facilities through countless volunteer hours.

Despite having three all-weather arenas, two turf areas, a training round yard, a training cross-country course, clubrooms and shedding, the facility still lacks a roofed arena. Such a structure is essential for ensuring year-round riding, improving safety conditions for riders and horses, and increasing the facility's utilisation regardless of weather. Furthermore, without a roofed arena, there is a risk that other sports might take precedence over the equestrian focus at the Grounds. The arena would anchor the legitimacy of horse riding on the Mornington Peninsula, preserving its heritage and securing its future.

While a Commonwealth grant, matched by the Shire led to significant infrastructure improvements, budget constraints prevented the construction of the roofed arena. The development of this arena is crucial to secure the Grounds' future as a premier equestrian establishment, providing a safe and affordable venue for training, competition and recreation. In a personal testament to its importance, one member has contributed a substantial inheritance in memory of her parents to support the fundraising efforts for this project.
