Somers Tennis Club is an integral part of the community and provides a much needed outlet for the health and wellbeing of residents of Somers and surrounding areas. We are a small Club with just 3 tennis courts, however our membership base is one of the highest and healthiest of any tennis clubs in our district.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s 2019 audit of tennis court lighting and our own light meter readings confirm that the lighting levels produced by our existing metal halide lights on courts 1 and 2 are below the 350 lux industry standard. Somers Tennis Club has identified the upgrade of these lights as a key priority in our Business Plan. We intend to upgrade to 8 x 600-watt Hawkeye LED luminaires (or similar) installed on our existing 12m light poles. The Hawkeye system uses 4,800 watts of energy compared to the 12,000 watts of energy being used by the current system. Lighting simulations prepared by D&A Lighting Systems indicate the Hawkeye 600 luminaires offer far greater lighting levels with an average of 457 lux (simulation report can be provided on request).

Our Club prides itself on providing outstanding, well maintained and up-to-date facilities. Over recent years, we have allocated significant funds to major projects including the resurfacing of all three courts and an upgrade to LED lighting on one of our courts. These projects have involved substantial contributions from our savings as well as grants and sponsorship, however the balance has been made up through bank loans.

As a Club, it is our priority to minimise energy use and ongoing maintenance costs, and to ensure we provide world-class lighting that meets minimum industry standards for many years to come. LED lights are highly efficient and last much longer than conventional sources, reducing maintenance costs significantly. They also produce brighter, whiter light that will improve visibility on our courts and and will reduce eye strain for players and spectators.
