Victorian Institute of Sport

Victorian Institute of Sport

The VIS was established in 1990 to assist the development of Victoria’s elite athletes. In addition to providing state-of-the-art sporting facilities, the VIS offers our athletes world-class coaching and performance support, with an emphasis on developing athletes with a performance lifestyle through ongoing career, wellbeing and education support. Our motto ‘Success in Sport and Life’ epitomises the purpose of the VIS.

Since its inception in 1990, the VIS has supported and developed some of the nation’s, and the world’s, most successful athletes including Olympic Champions Cathy Freeman, Lydia Lassila and Mack Horton; Tour de France veteran Cadel Evans; snowboarding sensation Scotty James; and Paralympic basketball and tennis hero Dylan Alcott.

The VIS awards scholarships to talented athletes on an annual basis. There are three scholarship programs available: Tier 1, Individual, and Future Talent. In conjunction with the National and State Sporting Organisations, VIS scholarship selection is guided by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) categorisation framework, which identifies athletes with the greatest potential to contribute to Australia’s high performance targets. Athletes are categorised based on their performance and are subsequently nominated for VIS scholarship by their respective sport.

There are currently 260 VIS scholarship holders across 32 different sports. These athletes range in age from 15 to 57 years and include Para-athletes, males and females, team sport and individual athletes in both Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

All funds raised will directly assist VIS scholarship holders with training costs, coaching, camps, equipment, travel costs and more.
